The Guru Is Expiring. The Guide Is Taking Over.
Expertise isn't losing value. Buyers are changing how they recognize it.
The Guide By Your Side Era is here.
And one of the easiest places to see it is in the authority signals that suddenly feel a little too loud.
The “in three years I built a seven-figure business” post.
The About page written like an awards introduction.
The sales page that spends its first screen proving credibility before naming the world the buyer is trying to navigate.
None of those things became untrue.
They became less persuasive.
That matters because the buyer isn’t rejecting expertise.
She is changing how she assigns it.
Authority is changing posture
For a long time, authority was established by accomplishment.
Revenue.
Years of experience.
Credentials.
The polished framework with a memorable name and five tidy steps.
Those things still carry weight. But they no longer do the whole job.
A buyer can believe you’re successful and still not believe you understand her business or life.
She can respect your experience and still wonder whether it applies to the world she’s navigating now.
She can think your framework is smart and still feel like she’ll have to do all the translation herself.
That translation used to be part of the buying process.
Today, it’s friction.
The new authority signal isn’t simply what you’ve accomplished.
It’s what you help the buyer see.
Why pedestal authority is becoming a liability
The wiser buyer didn’t appear overnight.
She’s bought the courses.
Joined the mastermind.
Downloaded the templates.
Watched the polished five-step system work beautifully for the person selling it and fall apart inside a business operating under completely different conditions.
She’s also spent the last few years learning to trust her own read.
That changes what she’s looking for.
She’s not searching for someone to hand her certainty.
What she is looking for is someone whose judgment helps her make a better decision.
Someone who understands the conditions around her.
Someone who can see where the road is changing before she reaches the turn.
Someone who can stand beside her with clearer sight lines.
That is the Guide By Your Side Era.
Not less expertise.
Expertise expressed through proximity, relevance, and usefulness.
The hidden cost of standing above the buyer
When your authority sits above the buyer, she has work to do.
She has to figure out whether your experience applies to her life, business, or market.
Whether your method can flex around the reality she’s actually living in.
Whether you understand the decision she’s making right now.
Whether you’re offering a real point of view or another polished promise.
The buyer’s filter is sharper now.
She’s not asking only:
“Is this person impressive?”
She’s asking:
“Does this person understand the world I’m building inside?”
That second question changes everything.
It changes the job of your About page.
It changes the role of your case studies.
It changes what your sales page needs to establish before you ever mention the offer.
It even changes how you use your story.
Your experience still matters.
But it needs to land IN her world, not remain a story about yours.
Run the Guru Check
Nobody, or almost nobody, sets out to sound like a guru.
It happens one habit at a time.
A credential dropped before the point lands.
A case study that centers your brilliance instead of the client’s decision.
A framework presented as the answer instead of a lens.
An About page that proves you are qualified but never makes clear why your thinking matters to the person reading it.
Pull up your About page, sales page, or last three emails.
Then ask:
Does this prove I’m impressive, or show that I understand what they’re navigating?
Does this ask the buyer to accept my certainty, or help her make a better decision?
Does my lived experience give her clearer sight lines, or does it remain a story about me?
That’s the distinction.
The Guide By Your Side Era isn’t asking you to hide your authority.
It’s asking you to make that authority useful from where the buyer is standing.
What buyers are rewarding now
She’s rewarding judgment. Not louder certainty.
She’s rewarding lived experience that’s applied to her situation. Not a highlight reel she has to translate.
She’s rewarding specificity about the decision in front of her. Not broad promises about confidence, clarity, or transformation.
She’s rewarding the ability to name the world creating the friction. Not just the feeling the friction produced.
This is where many businesses will get caught.
Their messaging may still be polished.
Their offers may still be strong.
Their expertise may still be real.
But the way they’re assigning authority belongs to the market that just ended.
That’s a timing gap.
Not a talent gap.
Why this matters before October
August gives you room to notice that gap.
There’s still time to look at the signals your marketing is sending and make the adjustment without rebuilding everything in motion.
October is likely to make the buyer’s filter less forgiving.
With Venus retrograde in Scorpio and Mercury following later in the month, buyers will move into a deeper review period.
They look harder at what is real.
What’s relevant.
What’s worth trusting.
What’s worth carrying forward.
Messaging that feels slightly out of step now may become much easier to dismiss then.
You don’t need a countdown timer to make that urgent.
The stakes are already real.
Wait until the territory shifts to draw the map, and you’re rebuilding in the middle of traffic.
Your expertise isn’t a problem
You do not need to erase your credentials.
You do not need to pretend you haven’t earned your authority.
You do not need to throw out your offers, rewrite your entire brand, or become softer and less certain.
The issue isn’t your expertise.
It’s how that expertise is being positioned for the buyer of this era.
What changes is the posture.
From proving you know the road to helping the buyer see the road she’s already on.
From broadcasting the answer to strengthening her ability to decide.
From standing above the market to walking beside the person building inside it.
That’s what the Guide By Your Side Era is asking of you.
The challenge is that old-era authority often still looks like good marketing. That makes it difficult to see inside your own business.
And it’s exactly what the paid tier of Data Over Drama is built to help you navigate.
Inside, you will find:
Messaging for the Guide By Your Side Cycle

You don’t need more information for information’s sake.
You need the right sight lines.
Because the authority you’ve already earned deserves to land in the market that’s here now.
The market isn’t random.
It never was.

Thank Goddess.
Sheri - I've been a fan for awhile and "maybe" it was something you wrote along the way, but I find myself today throwing everything I am into a Guide Mindset over Guru. I hope you're right bc I'm all in, already!
